I’m Laura Wando and I’m a birth doula and photographer living in Kampala, Uganda. I’m a wife and mother, and I’m passionate about improving the birth and maternity experience of women worldwide. In addition to birth work and photography, I also hold an MPH in International Health and Development and have extensive experience with Reproductive Health programs in developing countries. I’ve witnessed birth in the most rural of health clinics to the most modern private hospitals.
I was inspired to train as a doula after hiring a doula for my first baby’s birth – the support and encouragement I received from my doula was invaluable to me. I trained as a doula in 2012, and again in 2016 so I could support women here in Uganda through the Doulas of North America (DONA) certification program. I am also a trained hypnodoula through Hypnobabies and utilized hypnosis for childbirth during the birth of my 2nd child. As a facilitator of the Positive Birth Movement Kampala a global movement of support groups, which work to bring positivity into the birthing experience, I meet women from all over the world and support their desires for a positive birth experience. It is such an honor to be asked to join a birth team and support the welcoming of new life into a family!
My philosophy is that every pregnant woman deserves respect, evidence-based information, and continuous support during her birthing experience. When you work with me, I take on your values and provide constant support to you and your partner, enabling him or her to participate at his or her comfort level.
My photography services developed organically after capturing the birth stories of some of the first families I supported as a doula. I absolutely love interacting with families to document their connections and love.
